Second Life is based on a Cartesian coordinate system with X, Y and Z positions. This is presented as global, sim and local coordinates.

Global coordinates are seldom shown directly, but are the location in the full grid of a particular point. Sim coordinates are sometimes referred to as global, because they are really just the global coordinates minus the lower corner of the sim. Local coordinates refer to position relative to the root prim of a link set or the avatar for an attachment.
