A Sandbox, in the context of Second Life, is a special parcel of land, either private or public, where restrictions, such as Build, or Script, are either low or non-existent. This is done to allow Residents as a whole to build items, or test scripts, without having to get in the way of other Residents or squatting on private land. Sadly, this lack of restrictions coinciding with larger resident populations, makes sandboxes, including the Linden-owned Sandbox Island set of regions, prone to griefer attacks.
Griefing in Sandboxes
Linden Sandboxes tend to have the largest amount of griefing as there is no oversight of the sandbox, just a simple regular return of objects.
Many Sandboxes have taken to on-site staff and/or in world security firms to help keep a more civil space.
